    Musical Fall

Aaaah autumn, you and your magical colors, your dead leaves and your crazy parties.

Temperature is starting to drop in Montreal and already we are getting ready for some insane nights in Montreal. For all of those who went to Osheaga and got the green surprise (upcoming shows piece of paper), you surely jumped in excitment. I know I did.

It’s time for all the groopies to go search the web for some awesome artists coming to Montreal in the upcoming months. I know I’m going to at least 3 shows (for now). Angus & Julia stone have caught my eye, The Tallest Man on Earth will surely see my face and I won’t be missing Eels.

Bella – Angus & Julia Stone

I’ve heard about Ratatat coming to Montreal in September (the 7th, already sold out for sure…). Artists such as Two Door Cinema Club, Vampire Weekend, First Aid Kit, The XX, Jamie Lidell and Roger Waters (Holy Mother Of God) are also stopping by this great city of ours. Blonde Redhead is also coming with Pantha du Prince opening for her, might be a very interesting show. Caribou is stopping by Le National in September as well as Ok GO! in October.

Es Schneit – Pantha Du Prince

Take some time to go over your favorite venues and you’ll be greatly surprised I’m pretty sure. Montreal is a musical city, PROFITEZ-EN. Hope to see you guys there.

    Le National

    Métropolis

    Evenko

    Pop Montreal

    Escaping/Festivaling

Sailing To Nowhere – Broken Bells

Right now I wish I could be… sailing to nowhere would be the most elegant solution to my situation. A great escape into the wild. My choice isn’t too far from this though. Leaving for a few days to the Canadian countryside, relaxing in a roundhouse cabin on the Lac Saint-Jean will make everything better, I know it.

Another great thing will be waiting for me when I come back : Osheaga Festival (tickets still available BTW). Planning on going alone for a second year, music will be my only friend (eeeeemo). So many incredible bands that I discovered through this blog will be attending this year’s festival and I have the strong feeling that it will be epic.

Beach House was the band that I wanted to see live at the very start. Their style reminded me of the old bands of the 60s with their dreamy music. Psychedelicious shiiiite :) Since I’ve always dreamt of being at the ’69 Woodstock Fest, this was the closest I could get for the moment …still very, VERY, freaking far… :(

    Zebra – Beach House

But then I went DEEPER into the band list and found out about… The Morning Benders (GOD YES), The Black Keys, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (:D), The National (ZOMG), Horse Feathers, Major Lazer (their last show in Montreal was insane), Snoop Dogg (never saw him live), We Are Wolves, Metric, Pawa Up First

Now would be the time to post the biggest mashup of all those bands but I WON’T… because it would sound like shit :) Soooo I will just tell all you guys from Montreal and around to BUY SOME TICKETS FOR THIS AWESOME FESTIVAL ! Seriously, live music in the warmth of summer is such a wonderful experience. And it’s a good way of MAYBE meeting some bands (we never know what surprise life has in its pockets for YOU). It’s also a great way of discovering some new bands !

So, I’ll see you guys there :)

This Week is LIVE – Upcoming Shows

    Hey guys !

Since we are receiving loads of emails and…well… have a life, we are sometimes late on the answers. Sorry for all of those who didn’t get any.

Now, we have received an email recently about the next shows in Montreal and this week is gonna be pretty awesome.

Wednesday, July 21st : Groove Attic and La Strada @ les 3 Minots – 8:30pm

Groove Attic is a great funky band from Montreal. Their music is so groooooovaaayyyy they are worth a listen in my opinion. I’ve heard that they are pretty awesome live ;) They are playing with La Strada from Broooklyyyyn (damn right). La Strada has a very nice style. Check out their myspace if you don’t know them. I really love their music. “Drawing on Jungian archetypes, folk tales and Franco-Baltic harmonies, La Strada offers up the best of the New York indie scene: interesting music made by talented people who have a point of view and a love for what they do.”-The Huffington Post

Thursday, July 22nd : Five Alarm Funk and Bananafish with The Thanya, Emilie and Ali Band @ Divan Orange – 8:30pm

My personal favorite this week. Five Alarm Funk is a band from Vancouver that has the best style ever. A funky kind of music that will make you dance your ass off. Give their myspace a listen because you will get blown away. They are playing with Bananafish, a local band that mixes instruments in a pretty awesome way. They have a jazzy/progressive style that has to be beautiful in concert. The last band is another local creation. The Tanya, Emilie and Ali Band have this soothing indie acoustic style that we all love. They will all be there at Divan Orange this Thursday. Check out the BookFace event.

Friday, July 23rd : This Invention Matters and Royal Canoe @ 3 Minots – 8:30pm

Last show of the week featuring another local band : This Invention Matters. An pop band that makes me think about the bands we used to listen to when we were younger. They will be playing live with a Winnipeg based band Royal Canoe. These guys have some awesome songs, check them out on myspace (link above). Another funky style that meets afro-beat to make a inspiring style.

All of those shows are organized by Indie Montreal. Go to their site to have all the info you need about the upcoming shows. The tickets to the shows are all under 10$ so GO CHECK IT OUT !

We will be getting some tickets for the other shows coming at the end of the month so get ready for a little ticket giveaway guys :)

Here’s a little song for you guys who are waiting for Osheaga to come :)

Inuit Wedding – Pawa Up First

    The Morning Benders/Edward Sharpe

What a wonderful musical week. New bands, new loves. I found out, a little late about two incredible bands which I fell in love with right away. Better late than never huh, that’s what they say.

Numero uno : Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros arrived in my life with great strenght to hit me across the face. I discovered them while taking a look at our fellow bloggers’ recent activities. Seamstress For The Band always have such beautiful songs on their blog and that’s where I found out about Edward Sharpe.

Home – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

“After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house, and joining a 12-step program for addiction, Ebert began work on a story about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. According to Ebert, Sharpe “was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind…but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.” Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos in Los Angeles. In the summer of 2009, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert and Castrinos toured the country with a group of fellow musicians in a big white school bus”. Ain’t this a beautiful story… It is when such a wonderful band ensues.

Brother – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

NOW, the feature presentation : The Morning Benders. I discovered this band on a “blog” that I visit pretty frequently because of its RICH content and magnificient gallery of “take away shows”. They were talking about a session they had with The Morning Benders and how extraordinary it was and shit. SO, I went on youtube to see for myself who thosem orning benders were. God… I was…. surprised, greatly surprised.

Here’s the song from the album for those who, like me, couldn’t believe their ears : Excuses – The Morning Benders

Their second album Big Echo was released this year and is full of surprises. This band is like a kind of magic. This way of mixing voices has always reached me, deeply. The whole album isn’t as good as the video I found, but there are some beautiful songs. “The band has toured in support of Broken Bells, Grizzly Bear, The Kooks and Death Cab for Cutie, Ra Ra Riot, and has also played with Yo La Tengo, MGMT, Grand Archives, Yeasayer, Two Gallants, The Rosebuds, Au Revoir Simone, We Are Scientists, and White Rabbits. They also toured with The Submarines.” WHAAAAAT !?!

Sleeping In – The Morning Benders

And now a little word on La Blogothèque. Won’t be long, just to tell ALL OF YOU GUYS who take the time to read us. Go check it out, it’s MORE that worth it. Hundreds of shows from incredible bands that we all love. Their concept is just awesome.

Here is what they sent us all while we are waiting for The Morning Benders’ session.

    Too Hot To Live

What is there to do on a too hot day in Montreal ? Well this is what we were trying to find out some friends and I when walking on Ste-Catherine on this 38°C summer day. We saw HMV and told ourselves WHY NOT !? air conditioning and music in the same place. We got in and that’s exacltly when I heard it. Damn it was good and I knew this song from somewhere. I asked the employee and he told me that it was from The Roots‘ new album. Surprise surprise, no wonder why it is so good. These gods sampling Monsters Of Folk (a band that I love). It’s pure awesomness.

Dear God 2.0 (Feat. Monsters Of Folk) – The Roots

Yes I’ve already posted on The National, but I can’t get this song out of my head these days aaaand the song was deletd last time I posted (let’s hope it stays this time). The whole album is too good to be true and the singer’s voice (Matt Berninger) is a wonder.

Back From The Dead / DayDreaming

No I won’t be talking about Michael Jackson even if the first anniversary of his death was 2 days ago and that we only hear about him everywhere….

You know how things can happen so randomly sometimes, people call that a coincidence. Well that’s what happened when I was looking for an album from a Montreal based band called Valleys (still looking). I found myself with search results that looked more like this : Valleys Of Neptune.

    Red House – Jimi Hendrix

” -Yo Med, what are you listening to these days ?

    - The new one from Jimi Hendrix man !

    -Wtf… Jimi’s dead…”

Thanks for the info… Anyways ! I figured out most of the tracks are just rereleases from older albums, but there IS some new stuff, AND the old stuff is always good ;)

Crying Blue Rain – Jimi Hendrix

Here’s the only track I found from the actual Valleys I was looking for originally. I really like it, it’s from Montreal and they released an album called Sometimes Water Kills People that is pretty awesome from what I’ve heard.

    7 Silent Woods – Valleys

Daydream, I fell asleep amid the flowers
for a couple of hours on a beautiful day

Pretty well known lyrics aren’t they ? Well I thought so too when I was looking for the original song… Daydream from Wallace Collection was the first version released in 1968. During my research I stumbled upon a few other versions from I Monster and the Gunter Kallman Choir, but the one that surprised me the most was Lupe’s version. His gangsta lyrics on this slow and dreamy song was pretty…. special. He made it all clear in the end.

Daydreamin’ (ft. Jill Scott) – Lupe Fiasco

There’s crooked police that’s stationed at the knees
And they do drive-bys like up and down the thighs
And there’s a car chase goin on at the waist
Keep a vest on my chest
I’m sittin in my room as I’m lookin out the face
    Somethin to write about
I still got some damage from fightin the whitehouse, just a daydream

    -Lupe Fiasco

Hmm… I think Lupe is being more poetic than you even realize. If you are unfamiliar with his body of work, I can understand why you feel about that verse but if you know Lupe, you’d realize that verse is actually his commentary on the whole hip hop scene. Lupe is one of the farthest from “gansta” rappers out there and he’s actually extremely poetic and has great wordplay. It’s ashame you didn’t mention his entire first verse which is one giant metaphor relating life to a robot. One other thing is that those 4 lines are the stereotypical opening of a verse that Lupe uses to criticize the message in other rappers songs.

“But not too loud cause the baby’s sleepin’
I wonder if it knows what the world is keepin’
Up both sleeves while he lay there dreamin’
Me and my robot tip-toe ’round creepin’
I had to turn my back on what got you paid
I couldn’t see, had the hood on me like Abu Graib
But I’d like to thank the streets that drove me crazy
And all the televisions out there that breaks me”

Sidenote: did your research in this area have anything to do with my post: http://bridgingtheverse.com/2010/06/10/throwback-thursday-wallace-collection/

I’m not very familiar with the hip hop scene and the style of different rappers. Your comment just helped me understand all of it a lil better.
I did find your post which helped me understand the evolution of this song (I found it last after some research).
Thanks for taking the time to explain this to me :)
We need more rappers that actually have a message. Those mainstream gangstas aren’t really teaching us anything…

        • Kris.G 11:59 am on June 28, 2010 Permalink

          Cool man.

Another great lyricist in hip hop is Saul Williams if you’re interested. He started out as a def jam poet way before breaking into the hip hop scene and I find his work very amazing. Thanks for responding to my comment. I appreciate it.

saul williams… you’ve heard him before though, touchme! he’s done a track with blackalicious that was used in a bike movie we listened to… very insightful indeed!

        • falsereprise 2:46 pm on June 28, 2010 Permalink

And to anyone who dismisses hip hop’s ability to be poetic, theres : Aesop Rock, Guru, Blackalicious, Lyrics Born, Black Milk, Mos Def, Peanut Butter Wolf, Jay Lib, Madlib, Deltron aka Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Eyedea & Abilites, Dead Prez, Chali 2na and Jurassic 5, K-OS, Immortal Technique at times, NAS, Talib Kweli, GZA, Socalled, Cannibal Ox, Common, Kanser, Damu and y society, Dilated Peoples, just to name a few.

Besides, poetry is intimately linked to subjective sensitivity of certain aspects of diverse phenomena… i.e., one can see poetry in many more things than those labeled ”poetry”. as an example, a certain DJ Huot might find dirty south quite moving in a reverse kind of way whilst we might not!

Thank you very much Mr. Falsereprise… I think we all know that there are many great poets among the hip hop community. I made a stupid mistake when I talked about this Lupe’s song… I was just surprised to hear such things on an old hippy song.

But we have to agree that a lot of maintream rappers are just… well… special

    Valley Maker and cie

So, here I am after this crazy Claude VonStroke afterparty more dead than I already was. The nights are short but the music is still sooo soothing, or should I say even more when my ears are still bleeding from that epic House/Techno/Ghetto/Electro/WTV.

Jacob and Esau – Valley Maker

I stumbled upon a very special project not so long ago and fell in love with it. Who would have thought that Genesis (no not the band, the book) could become so interesting and …. well … musical ?! Valley Maker proved me that religion can sometimes make wonders out of the many disasters it created. Austin Crane just recently graduated from a double major in international economics and Russian language and literature and he chose to write this album as a final project because he “wanted to do a senior thesis project that reflected [his] love for and interest in songwriting and music”. With the help of his friend Amy Godwin, he created a masterpiece. No need to say that his professors/advisors were really excited about it. I bet you a shitload of money I don’t have that he’s gonna pass with flying colors.

    Jacob – Valley Maker

You can get the album right here on a pay-what-you-want basis. You may also want to check out his other stuff since he has been singing/playing for many years under his real name Austin Crane. It was a solo project that finally became a band but “kept the same name for a reason or another” says Austin. It’s worth more than a visit in my opinion.

    Joseph – Valley Maker

NOW, The National has also healed my poor ears with the High Violet album. Matt Berninger has such a wonderful voice. A low and deep voice that makes everything so light and easy :) If you haven’t already, go check out their site. The pictures on their home page are crazy (click to change, FB style).

Conversation 16 – The National [Removed by request]

A little psychedelicious part for this post. Caribou is awesome. His album Swim is filled with songs that will make your head explode, not from intense electro stuff though but from his crazy ideas. He is incredible at making music and sounds fit with a very bizarre but cool mood. He blew my miiiiiiind.

    Odessa – Caribou

That’s all folks ! Hope this musical material will make your life easier or better or happier or just more complete … I leave you on a last song from my heroes. A song that makes me happier even if it’s sad as hell (Queen’s most awesome side).

    Save Me – Queen

    Adios!

    Hard Times

    Life can be harsh sometimes…

Fortunately, music can do wonders. Since a week or so, the one who calls himself The Tallest Man On Earth has been my savior. Beautiful voice, a style that was so often compared to Bob Dylan‘s (hard to miss) and lyrics that really mean something. It’s crazy how songs can bring you somewhere else, somewhere where all is beautiful and light…

Love is All – The Tallest Man On Earth

It was my mother’s birthday not so long ago and she wanted some music from me. She is always asking me for some new music and I never take the time to share my passion with her. She is the one who introduced me to some wonderful bands (Queen, my love, is one of them) and who made me listen to music when I was still in her belly. So I ran to Archambault and got her two wonderful albums. The first one was from Fred Pellerin who really impressed me with a musical album filled with beautiful covers and soothing ballades. The second one was from Peter Gabriel (Scratch My Back) AND I was very surprised to find a cover of one of my favorite bands : Bon Iver. Pretty different, not as good in my opinion but worth a try.

Flume (Bon Iver cover) – Peter Gabriel

Bon Iver is still the most amazing thing to listen to when you need let go of life’s heatbutts. I wish I could be in my little heaven right now…

The Wolves (Act I And II) – Bon Iver

    We Want Miles

Aaaah mon cher Miles.

    So What – Miles Davis

But YES it’s pretty much the same kind of awesomness for those who wanted something a little more fresh. There are some new sounds that may seem kinda weird but GOD their beats are still THE SHIT !

    Drugs – Ratatat [REMOVED]

This is their 6th album. For those who are missing out, see this post : THIS POST

Once again, their beautiful imagination and their musical mind has come up with a masterpiece. I always call their albums masterpieces because they ALL give me shivers. Every. Single. One. They come up with some beats, some melodies… everything matches so perfectly. I’d give a lot to see them live.

    Party With Children – Ratatat

Here you are folks, enjoy this shiiiiiiiit (the dude in the intro of their remixes album does it better).

Si Guillaume Canet faisait des beats comme ça, ce serait l’homme le plus complet du monde.
